12 out of 14 Toyota plants in Japan shut down due to lack of free space on servers
Car production decreased by 13,000 units per day
At the end of the summer, Toyota shut down almost all of its car assembly plants in Japan. The reason was a lack of free space on the servers.
Toyota was performing scheduled maintenance on the servers. At some point, the procedure was interrupted due to the overflow of disks with databases. This led to the shutdown of the entire production order system.
On August 27, 2023, 12 of Toyota’s 14 plants in Japan were paralyzed. The system could not switch to the backup servers because they use the same configuration as the primary servers.
The problem was fixed in two days. On August 29, 2023, the Japanese company’s specialists launched a new server with more storage capacity. Factories resumed operations, but car production fell by 13,000 units per day during the pause.
