Russia claims to have created a mini-UAV for the Su-57 fighter jet: what is its role?

A Russian Su-57 fighter jet allegedly received small drones to be carried on board. UAVs will have different purposes.

This was reported by RIA Novosti.

The publication’s sources claim that the 5th generation Su-57 fighter jet has received mini-drones. They will be made in different versions: strike, reconnaissance or electronic warfare. The drones will be mounted on the external suspension and in the internal fuselage compartment.

“It is planned that the fighter jet will launch several drones at once and control this group of drones,” the source said.

About a dozen mini-UAVs will allow fighters to break through air defense by overloading information channels and by concentrated attacks on air defense systems.

The creation of small UAVs for the Su-57 was first announced in 2021. In addition, the fighter’s onboard equipment and software were modified to control the drones. A testbed was also created for ground testing of the UAV’s interaction with the fighter and with each other.

The publication claims that by 2027 the Russian Air Force is to receive 76 Su-57 fighters. Currently, the army has about 10-15 aircraft.
