Wake up, ChatGPT. The iA Writer program has learned to “separate” human text from that generated by artificial intelligence
The typing editor will highlight human and machine creations in different colors.
The minimalist, multiplatform typing program gets a new authoring feature in the latest version of iA Writer 7, which is designed to separate your own text from that created by AI programs like ChatGPT.
Human text is displayed in black, while for AI, you can choose gray in the settings.
On its blog, the company presents the feature as its philosophy of using generated text in writing and a means of “partnering” with AI to “make you think more and write better.”
Although the tool has automated elements, you will mostly have to rely on your own conscience when using it – for example, in a test by John Porter from The Verge, the program recognized AI text, but had to manually select ChatGPT affiliation to mark it.
In fact, the feature is not so much aimed at detecting plagiarism or watermarking content created by artificial intelligence, but rather at providing creators with a tool to see the sometimes blurred line between their own words and those printed by generative artificial intelligence.
Currently, the authoring feature is only available in iA Writer apps for Mac, iOS, and iPadOS, but it will be expanded to other platforms such as Windows and Android in the future. At the same time, the company has published the iA specifications on Github and says it is open to working with other programs to turn this feature into an “ideal” new standard.
