Ukraine begins transition to eco-friendly cars

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted legislative initiative No. 8172, which allows the Government to develop environmentally friendly public transport and build a powerful network of charging stations in our country.

This new law introduces restrictions on the purchase and operation of diesel and gasoline buses in public transportation.

Twelve years from now, in 2036, only electric buses, hydrogen fuel cell buses, and gas vehicles will be allowed to operate on bus routes in all regions of Ukraine. Thus, Ukraine will gradually completely abandon conventional buses. Public transportation powered by fossil fuels will be phased out in favor of more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives.

According to representatives of the Verkhovna Rada, this decision will have a significant impact on the situation. According to Ukravtoprom, a consortium of Ukrainian automakers, 25% of public transport in large cities will be electric or gas buses within six years of the bill’s introduction, and by 2033 this figure will double, leading to a shift to more environmentally friendly modes of transport.

In addition, to stimulate the installation of electric charging stations, the requirements for sites will be simplified and the capacity fee will be canceled until 2024 if they are connected to the Ukrelgo network. Such measures will help develop the electric vehicle ecosystem and increase the availability of charging stations.

The law also extends support to residential areas, allowing charging stations to be installed in apartment buildings with sufficient capacity. It will also motivate residents to switch to electric cars and raise the culture of environmental awareness among residents. By gradually phasing out diesel and gasoline buses and replacing them with electric and gas buses, Ukraine can reduce its carbon footprint, improve air quality, and contribute to a healthier environment for its population.

The draft law joins global efforts to combat climate change and transition to a cleaner transportation system and emphasizes Ukraine’s commitment to a greener and more sustainable future for future generations.
