The Aegis Ashore stationary missile defense system is put into operation in Poland

The Pentagon has announced the commissioning of the Aegis Ashore stationary missile defense system. It is located in Redzikowo, Poland.

The defense ministry said in a statement that the ground-based missile defense system was built to strengthen Europe’s missile defense. It is capable of intercepting “ballistics” at considerable distances.

Targets are intercepted by the system using SM-3 and SM-6 anti-missiles launched from Mk-41 vertical launchers.

In addition, Aegis Ashore is suitable for launching cruise missiles. However, it should be noted that this has never been officially reported. Airborne targets are tracked using the ground-based version of the AN/SPY-1D(V) radar. The same radar is installed on American destroyers.

In addition to Poland, Romania is also an Aegis Ashore operator. Both systems are part of the pan-European missile defense system. They were built for the Pentagon to protect the European continent from Iranian and Russian missiles.

The SM-3 Block 2A is capable of intercepting both conventional ballistic missiles and ICBMs. It intercepted the first intercontinental missile in 2020 during training launches.
