A drone of unknown origin flew freely to a settlement near Rostov-on-Don, where a military unit and an old airfield are located.
Residents of the Rostov region of the Russian Federation have spotted an unknown drone flying freely over the southern suburbs of Rostov-on-Don. At the same time, the Russian air defense forces did not react to the device, which could overcome 200 km and the occupied parts of Donbas. The local Telegram channel Novosti Rostov reported on the incident in one of the Russian regions.
The drone was reported online at 9:30 a.m. on December 22. The Russians photographed the device and recorded it flying on video. The video shows a slight buzzing sound, but no explosion that would indicate the operation of air defense systems.
They also indicate the area where the UAV of unknown origin was spotted – the town of Bataysk, located a few kilometers south of the outskirts of Rostov-on-Don.
The publication notes that the governor of the Rostov region has not yet commented on the incident in Bataysk. The Russian Ministry of Defense also did not write anything about the appearance of the drone 200 kilometers from the front line: the last report was about the participation of Kostroma paratroopers in the battles near Bakhmut.
On the Internet, you can find information about military facilities that could be of interest to an unknown UAV that flew to Bataysk. In particular, there is a military unit 20728, which is engaged in “ensuring security in emergency situations” and has an address in the city of Bataysk, Aviamistechko neighborhood, d. 38А.
There is also information about the Batay airfield on the southeastern outskirts of the settlement. Photos on Google maps show that this object looks like a ruin – there are photos from 2017 and 2023.
The distance from Bataysk to the Ukrainian-controlled territories, for example, Kurakhove, is about 200 km.
The war of the Russian Federation – details
It should be noted that in the fall and winter of 2023, attacks by unidentified drones on some regions of the Russian Armed Forces and the occupied Crimea became more frequent. For example, on December 19, it became known that drones were spotted in the Bryansk district of the Bryansk region, 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. On the same day, the Defense Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate stated that they had indeed conducted a special operation using aircraft.
In addition, on December 5, it was loud in Crimea. Local authorities claimed that the peninsula was attacked by more than 30 drones. All drones were allegedly shot down by air defense forces. At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces claimed that there were hits on the location of the helicopters.
