How Ukrainian drones can hit hundreds of kilometers deep into Russia
Ukraine’s defenders are increasingly targeting strategically important targets deep in the occupiers’ rear with unilateral attack UAVs, also known as “kamikaze drones.” A publication by OSINT analyst Hy Sutton lists some variants of such aircraft.
According to the expert, Ukraine uses the following types of aircraft to strike the aggressor’s rear:
- Mugin-5: Chinese UAV used in August 2022 to attack the Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Sevastopol and other strategic targets.
- Ukrjet UJ-22 Airborne: a single-engine drone with a payload of up to 20 kilograms. It was used during the attacks on Moscow in February 2023.
- Morok: OWA-UAV based on the RZ-60 target drone. It has a range of 300 km and a warhead weight of 3 kg.
- UJ-25 Skyline: a drone with a jet engine and distinctive arrow-shaped wings. Details about him are limited.
- UJ-26 Beaver: introduced in 2023, has a range of 1000 km and a payload of 20 kg. It was used to attack Moscow.
- Lyutyi (“Fierce”): a rather large drone with a design in the style of Antonov AN-BK-1 “Gorlytsya”. It crashed in Nizhny Novgorod last month.
- AQ-400 Scythe (Scythe): a project launched into mass production with a flight range of 750 km and a payload of 32 kilograms.
- Unnamed Types: a number of downed UAVs, including an unidentified type that may be the latest Ukrainian-made kamikaze drone.
The above-mentioned drones are used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to attack strategically important targets deep in Russia, which helps to increase the awareness of Russian citizens about the war, create an additional burden on air defense and increase the overall complexity of air defense.
