US investigates Meta’s role in facilitating drug trafficking
The United States Federal Prosecutor’s Office is actively investigating how social media networks owned by Meta may have facilitated drug trafficking. Investigators are focusing on Facebook and Instagram, which, according to unofficial sources, could be used to conduct illegal drug transactions, bringing profit to the company.
According to the Wall Street Journal, as part of the investigation last year, Meta was sent subpoenas requiring the company to provide documents that could confirm the presence of illegal drug content on their platforms or the facts of illegal sales.
In response to the accusations, a Meta spokesperson said that activities related to the sale of illegal drugs are categorically against the company’s policy. He also emphasized that Meta is actively taking measures to identify and remove such content and is already cooperating with law enforcement agencies to counteract the spread of drugs over the Internet.
According to U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, the U.S. government is working not only with Meta but also with other tech giants, including Snap, to combat the problem of synthetic drugs online. Further investigation is expected to help establish responsibility and develop measures to prevent similar situations in the future.
