Germany allocates record 11 billion euros for weapons for Ukraine

The Bundestag’s Budget Committee has approved a large-scale long-term military aid package for Ukraine worth over 11 billion euros. This decision demonstrates strong support for Ukraine from Europe’s largest economy and includes critical weapons systems, from air defense to modern drones.

Strategic Military Support Plan until 2029

The German Federal Government has approved a large-scale military support plan for Ukraine until 2029, allocating an unprecedented 11 billion euros to strengthen defense capabilities. According to Der Spiegel, a significant portion of the funds – 3 billion euros – will be directed towards purchasing anti-aircraft missiles for IRIS-T SLM and Patriot air defense systems, which will significantly enhance the protection of Ukrainian airspace.

About 900 million euros are planned to be spent on unmanned systems, which will expand the reconnaissance and combat capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Separate funding is provided for artillery ammunition and armored vehicles, and the total defense budget is expected to increase to 7 billion euros in 2025.

Of particular significance is the decision by German consortium Rheinmetall to begin construction of a 155mm artillery shell production plant in Ukraine. Production is scheduled to start in 2026, which will be an important step in establishing local defense industry.

This decision by Berlin demonstrates readiness to take greater responsibility for supporting Ukraine, especially given the uncertainty regarding further assistance from the United States. Such a long-term approach to military aid indicates Germany’s strategic vision for ensuring Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
