France introduces electric car rental — for €100 per month
In France, they are preparing to launch a new program of subsidizing electric cars, which provides for the possibility of renting a car for €100 per month. Finance Minister Gabriel Attal made the announcement on LCI news channel last weekend.
French citizens can now count on a subsidy of up to €6,000 if they buy electric cars for less than €47,000. Consumers can also use the trade-in program to get cash for their old combustion engine cars. Despite boosting the production and purchase of electric vehicles, they accounted for just 12% of new car sales in France in the first seven months of 2022.
France lags far behind Norway and other countries in the electrification of private transport. Last year, battery-electric and hybrid cars accounted for almost two-thirds of all new car sales in Northern Europe. The subsidy system plays a significant role in the process, making an electric car a more attractive purchase than a similar car with an internal combustion engine.
‘We know that electric cars remain very expensive for many French people,’ the finance minister noted, adding that the government is working to see how quickly it can implement the program.
