The US will launch the country’s first hydrogen passenger train in 2024

In two years, the United States will launch the nation’s first passenger train powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

San Bernardino County (California) has already signed a corresponding agreement. The first trains will start running on the state’s railways in 2024. At the same time, the authorities are ready to buy 25 more trains in the future.

The current deal involves the production of four Stadler FLIRT H2 trains. Everyone will be able to carry out passenger transportation between cities. The Swiss company Stadler already has several contracts for the supply of hydrogen trains. It has sold approximately 2,000 trains to 21 countries.

Stadler FLIRT H2 uses engines from the Canadian company Ballard Power Systems. The signed contract provides for the delivery of six FCmove-HD+ power units. The power is 100 kW (136 horsepower). During operation, such engines emit condensed water and water vapor into the atmosphere instead of greenhouse gases.
