Which used cars can be bought in Germany: selection and prices

Analysts analyzed millions of ads for the sale of used cars in Germany on mobile.de, autoscout24.de and other websites and identified the most popular cars sold on the German car market.

Germany is the largest car-producing country in the European Union and one of the main European car markets in terms of the number of vehicles sold there every year.

In addition, Germany ranks third in the ranking of countries from which used cars are brought to Ukraine. From July to August, there were 11.7% of the total number, or 6.4 thousand pieces. Specialists of the Institute of Auto Market Research analyzed more than a million car sales ads on the Internet on German online marketplaces provided by the aggregator Automoto.ua, which collects car sales ads from over 100 car websites around the world, and identified the main trends and the most popular models in this country.

What age are cars sold in Germany?

The average age of cars sold online in Germany during October was recorded at 11.3 years. This is more than 5 years less than the average age on the Ukrainian online author market (16.6 years).

The Germans offer the most 2019 cars for sale — 7.5% of the total number of ads, this is a clearly expressed peak on the graph of the age structure of the market. In Ukraine, this peak is in 2008. Also noticeable is the three times smaller share of passenger cars over 30 years old (i.e. from 1992): 3.3% in Germany versus 11.7% in Ukraine.

In general, the main part of the offer on the German car market is in the range of 2017-2020 years of production.

In general, the graph of the price structure of the German market is smoother than that of the Ukrainian market, due to the greater number of offers for sale of cars worth more than $15,000. Also, in Germany, the share of cars worth more than $50,000 is four times larger: 4.5% versus 1.1%.

Gasoline cars are the most popular on the German car market today: 53% of them were in October. The share of cars with diesel engines was 40.4%. The share of electric cars was fixed at the level of 1.1% of the total number of ads.

It is interesting that in Ukraine the share of diesel cars among sales announcements on the Internet turned out to be smaller than in Germany: 28.8% according to the results of October.

The main differences from the Ukrainian car market

Among the main differences between the Ukrainian and German online car markets, the experts of the Institute of Car Market Research single out:

  • The average age of cars on the German market is shorter: by more than 5 years, than in Ukraine;
  • Another range of popular years of production in used car sales: 2017-2020 instead of 2005-2008 in Ukraine;
  • The share of passenger cars over 30 years old in Germany is three times lower;
  • A quarter smaller share of passenger cars costing up to $10,000 and a larger share of cars priced over $50,000 compared to Ukraine;
  • The top 15 most popular models in Germany consist of newer and more expensive cars;

There were fewer diesel passenger cars on the Ukrainian market.
Such differences are the result, first of all, of the economic situation: the level of economic development in Germany is much higher than in Ukraine. Accordingly, citizens have the opportunity to buy more expensive and, accordingly, newer cars. And also — credit and leasing programs are available, which make cars more affordable for the end consumer: you don’t need to have the entire amount “on hand” to buy a car.
