Lockheed Martin and Rafael will jointly develop a laser missile defense system

Defense concern Rafael, operating on the Israeli market, is engaged in the development of a laser anti-missile system. The project aims to reduce the cost of intercepting missiles. The other day it became known that Lockheed Martin, which is one of the Pentagon’s largest contractors, has decided to join the implementation of the project.

Three years ago, the leadership of the Israeli Defense Ministry informed the general public about a breakthrough in the development of a laser anti-missile system. The Rafael concern is responsible for the design of the ground-based anti-missile defense system. For its part, the Elbit Systems company undertook the development of an air-based anti-missile defense system.

Laser anti-missile system ‘Shield of Light’ At the beginning of the year, Rafael introduced the ‘Magen Or’ system. In literal translation, its name means ‘Shield of Light’. The power of the laser exceeds 100 kW. It is capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 10 km.

The IDF plans to use high-power laser systems to strengthen echelon air defense. It includes the Hetz, David’s Sling, and Iron Dome missile interception systems. The first Magen Or system will be deployed near the border with the Gaza Strip within a year.
