The number of killed and wounded Russian soldiers in the war in Ukraine is approaching 200 thousand, writes The New York Times on Friday, February 3, citing high-ranking American and other Western officials.
The article states that Moscow is sending poorly trained recruits and ex-prisoners, as a result of which ‘hundreds of soldiers are killed or injured every day.’ In particular, according to high-ranking American military and officials, about 50 thousand people were recruited to the private military company ‘Wagner’ to participate in the battles. American officials believe that the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, is ready for hundreds of thousands of casualties of his soldiers in Ukraine, although the large number of casualties may somewhat undermine his political support.
The 200,000 Russian losses in just 11 months are eight times higher than the American losses in the two decades of the war in Afghanistan, the publication compares.
The figures are based on official data from both sides of the war, satellite images, intercepted talks, social media reports and local media. Pinpointing exact numbers is extremely difficult, and estimates vary even within the US government, the paper notes.
It will be recalled that in November 2022, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States, General Mark Milley, estimated the losses of both sides in the war at more than 100,000.
As of February 3, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine estimates the losses of Russian troops at almost 130,000.
Russia rarely comments on its losses. In September 2022, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation stated that less than six thousand Russian soldiers and more than 100 thousand Ukrainian soldiers died in the war.
