What happens to the T-90M “Breakthrough” after a “smart projectile” hits (video)
The new video of the use of homing rounds with self-propelled warheads clearly shows the entire principle of operation and the advantages of such ammunition as SMArt 155 and BONUS
To destroy enemy armored vehicles, the Armed Forces of Ukraine actively and extremely effectively use “smart munitions” such as SMArt 155 and BONUS, which contain homing sub-elements.
Another episode of the use of such ammunition was demonstrated by the fighters of the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade “Magura” on the example of the destruction of a Russian T-90M tank “Proryv”.
In fact, the work to destroy a target begins from the moment it is detected, identified, and its exact coordinates are determined, because any precision weapon requires equally accurate target localization. All of this information is transmitted online to the weapon, after which a single shot is fired.
When the projectile is at a certain height, it opens and then two sub-elements begin to operate. It should be noted that the equipment in the form of two submunitions and their principle of operation of SMArt 155 and BONUS are the same.
Each of these submunitions has a target acquisition system consisting of a combined infrared and radar GWS. The fact that submunitions are equipped with a parachute or winglets increases the time in the air required to find a target. And as soon as the target is fixed, the warhead is detonated to form a warhead.
There is no need to expect a special “fire show” because the target is actually hit by a small-sized warhead formed from the material of the cluster funnel, but accelerated to a speed of about 5 km/s.
Therefore, even in professional videos demonstrating BONUS projectiles, it is extremely difficult to capture their flight.
This element easily pierces the upper armor, in this particular case the T-90M “Breakthrough”, which leads to a fire in the combat compartment, most likely due to the charges placed in the charging machine, as well as the creation of secondary fragments from the armor itself, which injure the crew. In the video itself, only the gunner was able to get out of the vehicle.
