Elon Musk buys AI.com domain previously owned by ChatGPT
An interesting event took place in the world of artificial intelligence. In February, it became known that OpenAI, which created ChatGPT, bought the AI.com domain. Now, this domain is apparently in the hands of Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, and is being hosted by X.ai. This is Musk’s new research project on machine learning.
Internet domains are bought and sold every day, but two-letter domains like AI.com are rare and extremely expensive. Especially if they are well-known words or abbreviations. That’s why I wonder if Elon really bought this domain name for himself.
OpenAI probably wanted people who mistakenly dialed AI.com to become their regular users. But now the domain is pointing to X.ai, and we can only guess at the reasons for this.
X.ai is a new project of Elon Musk. Its goal is to “understand the true nature of the universe,” but since the site’s launch in July, no progress has been seen.
It is not entirely clear why OpenAI decided to sell the domain. Perhaps they changed their plans, or the sale was temporary. Perhaps they decided that ChatGPT was already so well known that they didn’t need an additional domain.
In the end, no one seems to care who owns AI.com. But this story shows how artificial intelligence and technology are increasingly influencing our world and that companies are fighting for domain names.
We would like to note that the cost of such domains reaches several million dollars, or even dozens of them. For example, the IT.com domain was sold for more than $3.8 million last year. And domains with the word AI can be very expensive because of the hype that is currently raging in the field of artificial intelligence.
