Odesa Oblast authorities intend to build a new bridge across the Dniester Estuary in Zatoka. Due to massive strikes by the Russian Armed Forces, the facility cannot be restored.
Odesa Oblast is planning to build a highway with a bridge crossing the Dniester Estuary to replace the bridge destroyed by the Russians. This was reported by Yug.Today with reference to the Program of Socio-Economic and Cultural Development of Odesa Region for 2023 and the Main Development Areas for 2024-2025 approved by the Regional Council.
The project is scheduled to be implemented next year.
“The state of the road surface and the capacity of the Black Sea roads between the mouth of the Danube and the mouth of the Dnipro are becoming an important element of deterrence within the national security strategy. In this context, it is necessary to highlight the vulnerability of transport logistics to move the necessary forces to the area between the Danube and the Dniester. The solution to this issue is the construction of a bridge across the Dniester estuary,” the document says.
According to media reports, the bridge across the Dniester estuary, which has been repeatedly shelled by Russians, is not only strategically important but also economically feasible, as it will shorten the route for traffic to southern Europe.
In the spring of 2022, the Russian army attacked the bridge in Zatoka, which crosses the Dniester Estuary and connects the south of the region with the mainland of Ukraine, four times. After numerous missile strikes, the facility could not be restored.
Currently, traffic on the bridge is blocked. In addition to two pedestrian paths, the bridge has two lanes for traffic and a railroad track.
