The conversion of the 9B28 missile from the S-200 to a ballistic missile was made possible by a new radar

The Ukrainian Armed Forces use 9B28 missiles from the Soviet S-200 air defense system to strike ground targets. This was made possible by a new generation of radar.

Forbes journalists talked to former NSA employee Trent Telenko, who is familiar with this anti-aircraft missile. He recalled that it was developed by KB-1 specialists in the 1960s to intercept American missile carriers. Today, the modernized 9B28 missile is the most powerful weapon of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for striking the enemy’s rear.

The rocket received a new GSN. According to Telenko, Ukrainian engineers could have installed radar from missiles for the Grom-2 air defense system. The eight-ton 5B28 missile has enough space to accommodate a Grom-2 warhead. To correct the trajectory during the flight, it is enough to install a millimeter-range radar in the missile. According to the expert, a missile from the S-200 can fly 402 km. At the same time, Russian media claim that its range can reach 600 km.
