Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden team up to create next-generation European tank to replace Leopard 2
It seems that Germany has decided to compete with itself. The European country is participating in two projects to develop a new European tank.
Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden are preparing to start developing a next-generation European tank. This was reported by the German publication Handelsblatt. The project will involve German defense companies Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KWM).
The next generation European tank will replace the German Leopard 2. The details of the program are not yet specified.
What is interesting about this story is that Germany is involved in another project to develop a European tank. The Franco-German holding company KNDS (Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter) is leading the program called Main Gun Combat Systems (MGCS). Italy may also join it.
The tank created under the MGCS program was supposed to replace the Leopard 2 and Leclerc in 2035. However, Handelsblatt writes that the Franco-German program, which was launched in 2017, is unlikely to be implemented.
