Bulgaria to hand over faulty S-300 missiles: what are they for for Ukraine?
The Defense Committee of the National Assembly of Bulgaria supported the decision to provide Ukraine with unusable missiles for the S-300 systems.
This was reported by the Bulgarian News Agency.
“Bulgaria does not have the necessary capacity to repair these munitions on its own. Their use by our army would pose a serious risk to the lives of Bulgarian soldiers. Unlike Bulgaria, Ukraine has stated that it has the capability to put such faulty ammunition into service,” the initiators of the transfer said in a statement.
According to them, Ukraine will repair these missiles and will be able to strengthen its air defense with them.
During the debate, some Bulgarian MPs argued that the decision posed a threat to national security and demanded the resignation of the Minister of Defense.
Bulgarian Defense Minister Todor Tagarev himself explained that the proposal to provide additional military assistance to Ukraine does not include any air defense missile systems. He clarified that Bulgaria would only provide Ukraine with missiles that it could not repair itself.
“It is better for us not to store malfunctioning SAM missiles because it is dangerous and can endanger the lives of personnel,” added Defense Chief Admiral Emil Eftimov.
At the same time, Bulgaria is expected to transfer to Ukraine surplus 5.56 caliber ammunition from the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ stockpile.
