Armed with 12 Tomahawk missiles: a new nuclear attack submarine USS Hyman G. joined the US Navy. Rickover

The US Navy commissioned the nuclear-powered submarine USS Hyman G. Rickover. It received the tail number SSN 795. The ceremony took place in Connecticut.

The nuclear submarine is named after an admiral who served for more than 60 years. Hyman Rickover is known as the “father of the nuclear fleet”. His work led to the creation of the first nuclear-powered submarine of the US Navy. It was built in 1955 and named the USS Nautilus (SSN 571).

Almost three decades later, the U.S. military commissioned the first nuclear submarine, which was named in honor of Hyman Rickover. The submarine was assigned the SSN 709.

As for SSN 795, it is 115 meters long, 10.4 meters wide and has a draft of 9.8 meters. The new nuclear-powered submarine has a vertical launch system that allows for the launch of 12 BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles.

USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN 795) is the 22nd Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarine. It belongs to the Block IV generation. The Block V submarines will be equipped with a new payload module that will increase the number of Tomahawk missiles to 40.
