Half a million cubic meters plus: new gas wells come on stream in Ukraine

According to experts, one of the wells is an exploration well, and the other is located in a field that is more than 50 years old.

Due to Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, it has become much more difficult for many companies to engage in gas production in Ukraine. However, the situation with gas production is already improving in 2023. For example, Ukrgasvydobuvannya has drilled two high-rate wells over the past month, which increased daily natural gas production by 500,000 cubic meters, according to the company’s website.

One of the wells is reported to be an exploration well at a recently discovered field, and the other is a production well at a field that is more than 50 years old. The exploration well drilling location was determined based on the 3D seismic surveys conducted earlier.

“We continue to work with both new and old fields, and we see that our approaches are proving effective: these are not the first successful high-yield wells in these fields that add a significant plus to the company’s overall production,” said Oleg Tolmachev, interim CEO of the gas producer.

It is noted that after the drilling of the second well, gas production was increased by 156 thousand cubic meters. The specialists also managed to clarify the geological structure of the field and outline further plans for drilling the next wells.

At the same time, since the beginning of 2023, Ukrgasvydobuvannya has commissioned 58 new gas wells with a total average daily flow rate of 5.3 million cubic meters.

On August 15, Naftogaz CEO Oleksiy Chernyshov said that state-owned Ukrgazvydobuvannya, which is part of Naftogaz of Ukraine, was developing two new wells that increased natural gas production by 430,000 cubic meters per day.
