Google under pressure: Russia is trying to force the company to “leave the country” – ISW
The Russian authorities are trying to force the American company Google to stop working in the country by continuing to issue fines to it.
This is stated in the report of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
It is noted that On November 4, a Moscow magistrate court fined Google 15 million rubles (approximately $165,745) for repeatedly failing to localize personal data of Russian citizens in Russia.
The Russian state regulator Roskomnadzor requires foreign Internet services to localize databases of Russian users starting July 1, 2021, and in June 2022, Russian courts fined Google 15 million rubles for non-compliance with this law.
Earlier, the Russian government had already banned certain Western social networks and demanded that Google remove “false information” about Russia’s war in Ukraine in early 2022.
According to the Institute, Russia is probably trying to force its citizens to use search engines and other Internet services of Russian companies, which the government can control better than international companies such as Google.
