A bulk carrier loaded with grain explodes in the Black Sea – Reuters
A merchant ship carrying grain was lightly damaged off the coast of Ukraine. It probably hit a floating sea mine.
Four maritime and trade sources reported that the Liberian-flagged bulk carrier Georgia S, loaded with wheat, was heading out of Pivdennyi port when it was damaged on the high seas on Thursday.
A source in the Ukrainian government said that the ship was probably hit by a floating sea mine.
According to MarineTraffic, a ship tracking and maritime analytics company, the vessel was heading to the Romanian port of Constanta on Friday.
Which countries are affected by the Black Sea mining problem
Earlier, Natalia Gumenyuk, head of the Joint Coordination Press Center of the Southern Ukrainian Defense Forces, said that more than 20 vessels had already used the humanitarian corridor in the Black Sea.
“There were no incidents of danger, except for those moments when you heard that they took place in Romanian waters, but there was no such thing in the territorial sea of Ukraine,” she said.
Gumenyuk added that the fact that this happened in the territorial waters of other states reinforces the fact that the mining of the Black Sea, which Russia has arranged despite Ukraine’s intention to continue the “grain corridor,” concerns everyone who has access to water.
Even the discovery of water mines, which was recorded during the full-scale invasion in Georgia, Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria, is an understanding for everyone that it is not only Ukraine that must protect the Black Sea. We are currently securing the security sector of the humanitarian corridor itself, and we are doing a good job,” she emphasized.
