After seven years, Russia publishes video of Su-33 fighter jet crash into the Mediterranean
Seven years ago, the world learned about the crash of a Russian Su-33 deck fighter into the Mediterranean Sea. Recently, videos have been published showing the moments after the “tragedy”.
Details:
On December 3, 2016, during ideal weather conditions (visibility of +10 km, winds up to 22 km/h and moderate sea waves), an incident with a Russian “analogavnet” aircraft occurred.
After completing a mission in Syria, a Su-33 fighter jet returned to the very old so-called Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and failed to land successfully.
He went off the deck and plummeted into the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Official sources in Russia confirmed the incident, noting that the pilot managed to eject in time.
Initial reports indicate that the crash was caused by a break in the aerofinisher cable used during the landing.
The Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier is the only large aircraft carrier of the Russian Navy.
Here is some information about this ship:
- Type: Aircraft carrier cruiser
- Displacement: More than 55,000 tons gross displacement
- Length: 305 meters
- Width: 72 meters
- Draft: 11 meters
- Built in Ukraine at the Mykolaiv shipyard.
- The launching of the water: 1985
- The plant is put into operation: 1990
- Main weapons: Anti-aircraft missile systems, anti-ship missile systems, and an aviation group that includes Su-33 fighters, MiG-29K multi-role fighters, and Ka-27 helicopters.
- Maximum speed: up to 29 knots
- Crew: more than 1900 people (including aviation personnel)
- Features: “The Admiral Kuznetsov differs from typical American aircraft carriers in that it has cruise weapons to destroy underwater and surface targets. It also has a raceway for aircraft takeoff, rather than a steam catapult, as on American aircraft carriers.
- History: According to Wikipedia, he was kidnapped from Ukraine in 1991 by Russians and transported from Sevastopol in Crimea to Russia, to the Murmansk region. Why hijacking, because the then President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk forbade this ship to go to sea, but it did go out without a significant part of the crew and immediately, at full speed, went to the Bosphorus, where it “flew” through the strait almost without slowing down and without warning anyone. Turkey was afraid to interfere with the kidnapping. In fact, it is still afraid to ban Russian ships from passing through the strait.
During its service, the Admiral Kuznetsov took part in several exercises and military operations, including in Syria. However, the ship also faced technical problems and incidents that required repairs.
