AI in the law: the EU ratifies a political agreement on artificial intelligence rules

Lawmakers in the European Parliament on Tuesday ratified an interim agreement that paves the way for a full-fledged, world-first artificial intelligence law.

The landmark agreement aims to regulate and limit AI, which is used in almost all areas. Thus, the EU becomes the first global power to gradually bring AI into the realm of law.

The agreement identifies potential threats and prohibits: unintentional copying of facial images from the Internet or CCTV footage; emotion recognition at work and in educational institutions; and the use of human vulnerabilities (age, disability, social status, etc.) by AI.

In addition, the new rules will require fulfillment of certain obligations before launching AI on the market.

There will be restrictions on the use of biometric identification systems and fines for violators – from 7.5 million euros or 1.5% of global turnover to 35 million euros, respectively 7% of turnover.

Users will also have the right to file complaints.

A plenary vote on the law itself may take place as early as April this year, after the document is approved at the committee level.
