All Chinese smartphones will receive satellite communication support

China Telecom has joined forces with Chinese smartphone manufacturers, including Huawei, Honor, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, ZTE, and Meizu, to jointly develop and promote smartphones that support satellite communications.

This was reported by Sparrows News.

According to China Telecom, satellite communications is a strategic direction for the mobile industry, which can bring significant benefits to consumers, businesses and society.

However, a number of technical and commercial challenges need to be overcome to make satellite communications accessible to a wide range of consumers.

In particular, it is necessary to create smartphones that can directly connect to satellites in the absence of mobile communication, as well as to ensure their availability, attractiveness, and competitiveness in the market.

To this end, China Telecom and its partners have begun working together to create a new “flagship standard” for consumer satellite communications that defines requirements for technical parameters, functionality, design, certification and other aspects of satellite-enabled smartphones.

According to China Telecom, at least five smartphone models that meet the new “flagship standard” for consumer satellite communications from different manufacturers are expected to be available by the end of 2024.
