Bayraktar TB2 combat drone crashes in Ethiopia: questions arise
The Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drone crashed in the Khoro Guduru Velega area of the Oromia region. The accident was probably caused by technical problems or pilot error.
The drone was equipped with high-precision small-sized MAM-L bombs manufactured by the Turkish company Rocketsan. It is worth noting that in 2021, Turkey tried to supply its UAVs to Ethiopia, but the countries did not officially agree on a deal.
It is quite possible that the Ethiopian Defense Forces wanted to use a drone strike against rebels who were dissatisfied with the government. In general, Ethiopia has suffered from ethnic conflicts and uprisings in recent decades. For example, the recent war between the central government and Tigray province resulted in thousands of casualties and millions of displaced people.
The conflict between the Ethiopian federal government and local authorities in the Tigray region began on November 4, 2020, when the Ethiopian Prime Minister accused the region’s ruling party, the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front, of attacking army camps.
In a few years, thousands of people died, millions were displaced, and hundreds of thousands of people were on the verge of starvation.
