In Malaysia, two helicopters collided during a rehearsal for the Royal Navy’s 90th anniversary parade. Many people died as a result of the incident.
The accident occurred on the morning of April 23, at about 09:45 local time (about 04:45 Kyiv time). It is not yet known what caused the helicopters to collide.
Two military helicopters collided during the morning rehearsal for the Royal Malaysian Navy’s anniversary parade. As it later became known, the crash involved HOM (M503-3) and Fennec (M502-6) helicopters.
The accident occurred in the city of Lumut, Perak, where the Royal Malaysian Navy naval base is located. The moment of the helicopter collision was also caught on video.
The footage posted online shows that one of the helicopters hit the tail of the other. After the collision, both helicopters crashed to the ground.
There are dead as a result of the accident
The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department reported that there were 7 people on board the HOM (M503-3) helicopter that crashed at a local stadium. The other helicopter, a Fennec (M502-6), had 3 crew members on board. The second aircraft crashed into a swimming pool nearby.
Unfortunately, all 10 people on board both helicopters were killed in the collision.
The deaths of all the victims were confirmed on the spot, and the remains were sent to the military hospital of the Royal Malaysian Naval Base Lumut for identification,
– the Royal Navy said.
Local residents were also urged not to publish footage of the incident in order not to interfere with the investigation. It is not yet known what caused the collision between the two helicopters. The Malaysian Navy said that a commission would be set up to investigate the causes of the incident.
By the way, in March 2024, there was also an accident involving a helicopter in Malaysia. Then a coast guard helicopter crashed into the sea near the island of Angsa during a training flight. Luckily, both pilots and two other passengers survived – they were rescued by fishermen.
