ByteDance is exposed for secretly using OpenAI technology to create its own chatbot
ByteDance, the company known as the owner of the popular TikTok platform, has been accused of secretly using the OpenAI API to develop its language model known as Project Seed. According to the information, ByteDance violated OpenAI’s terms of use, which prohibit the use of their API to train its own AI models, writes The Verge.
ByteDance’s internal documents indicate that the company instructed its employees to conceal these actions. After the launch of Doubao chatbot in China, ByteDance is suspected to have continued to use OpenAI resources to test its models.
In response to these accusations, OpenAI temporarily suspended ByteDance’s access to its APIs, stating that it may completely block the account if violations are confirmed.
ByteDance denies allegations of violating the rules for using the GPT API, claiming that it has a license agreement with Microsoft to use OpenAI technologies in foreign markets. The company also emphasized that the Doubao chatbot, which operates exclusively in China, is based on its own developed model.
Chinese companies are known for their ability to copy everything Western and adapt Western brands to Chinese ones. This primarily concerns technology, engineering, clothing and accessories. But obviously, this applies to the IT sector as well.
