Certain food and strong alcohol cannot be sent by mail: Cabinet approves list

On September 8, 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved a list of attachments that are prohibited by mail. The relevant document is contained in Resolution No. 958. In particular, it refers to certain types of food and alcohol, so this news may be of interest to both owners of online stores selling such goods and their customers.

Restrictions on the shipment of certain types of goods have been in place before. According to Art. 14 of the Law of Ukraine “On Postal Service” prohibits sending goods that may pose a threat to human life and health, or lead to the destruction or damage of other postal items and postal equipment. The list of such goods is determined by the Cabinet of Ministers. In fact, the government has recently adopted a corresponding resolution.

For example, according to the rules of Nova Poshta, it is forbidden to send food with an expiration date of less than 5 days. Goods prohibited for shipment by Ukrposhta can be checked on a special website.

The new regulation prohibits mailing within Ukraine:

  • firearms of all types and parts thereof;
  • drugs;
  • toxic and radioactive substances;
  • national currency (except for coins for collectors);
  • food products with a shelf life of less than 10 days;
  • alcoholic beverages with an ethyl alcohol content of more than 8.5 percent by volume;
  • as well as tobacco products, liquids used in electronic cigarettes that do not have excise tax stamps of the established standard, etc.

It is forbidden to send in international parcels:

  • firearms and drugs;
  • weapons permits, employment records, military IDs, and identity documents;
  • special means of covertly obtaining information (in particular, devices that can be used to secretly record, for example, devices with a hidden recorder, etc;)
