China is actively implementing artificial intelligence: more than 40 models approved in six months
Over the past six months, Chinese regulators have approved more than 40 AI models for public use. This happened after Beijing began requiring tech companies to obtain permits to launch their models in August 2023.
According to the Chinese state-owned newspaper Securities Times, last week Chinese regulators issued licenses for the use of 14 major language models. The recipients include Xiaomi, 4Paradigm, and 01.AI. This is the fourth batch of permits since August last year.
Previously, such large tech companies as Baidu, Alibaba, and ByteDance have obtained licenses. They were among the first to be allowed to launch their AI models.
Chinese regulators then issued two more batches of permits in November and December. Although the government does not disclose the exact list of approved companies, the Securities Times reported that licenses for more than 40 models have been issued.
According to the CLSA brokerage, there were 130 language models in China, 40% of the world’s total. This is only slightly behind the US’s 50 percent share.
