US intelligence has found that Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s large-scale military purge took place against a backdrop of corruption that has undermined his efforts to modernize the armed forces and cast doubt on China’s ability to wage war.

U.S. officials believe that because of the widespread corruption in China’s missile forces and the entire national defense industry, Xi Jinping would not start a war in the coming years.
US intelligence assessments have cited several examples of corruption, including missiles filled with water instead of fuel and large fields of missile silos in western China with covers that do not function to effectively launch missiles.
Over the past six months, corruption investigations in China have purged more than 12 high-ranking defense officials. Both public and unannounced dismissals are taking place in the country.
Bloomberg’s sources added that the purges showed Xi Jinping’s power over the Communist Party and his commitment to fighting corruption and preparing the Chinese army for long-term combat operations.
