Chinese Wing Loong II strike drone enters Taiwan’s air defense identification zone for the first time

Chinese aircraft have once again entered Taiwan’s air defense recognition zone. Moreover, the Ministry of National Defense of the island state announced the use of Wing Loong II for the first time.

On October 3, 2023, Wing Loong II was spotted in the southwestern air defense quadrant, north of Pratas Island. The drone has been in service with the Chinese army for five years, but only now has it entered the Taiwanese air defense recognition zone for the first time.

Wing Loong II is a development of AVIC. The unmanned aerial vehicle can strike ground targets, as well as perform reconnaissance, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Three antennas allow the intercepted signals to be transmitted to ground stations, and there are six points under the wings for mounting weapons.

China is actively exporting the Wing Loong II. Among the buyers of drones are countries such as Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. In addition, the UAV serves as a platform for testing new technologies. It is possible that China was testing something when it sent the drone into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone.
