Denmark to finance production of a full division of Bohdan air defense systems for Ukraine

Danish Defense Minister Troel Lund Poulsen called on other countries to place orders with Ukrainian companies. Because the defense industry is capable of producing more than it has funding for.

The Danish government will finance the production of 18 Bohdan air defense systems for Ukraine’s needs. This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Denmark.

Back in the spring, Defense Minister Troel Lund Poulsen launched an initiative to finance Ukrainian defense companies for the needs of the Defense Forces. The paradigm shift allows us to speed up assistance to Ukraine and do it more effectively.

The first such project will be the purchase of 18 Bohdan self-propelled guns, which are to be manufactured “in the coming months.” The decision to purchase the artillery systems was made following recommendations from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Strategic Industries.

“I hope that more countries will follow the example of the Danish procurement model in Ukraine. The capacity of Ukrainians to produce equipment is greater than the funding they have now. Therefore, there is a great potential for such agreements to produce more equipment in Ukraine and at the same time help build the defense industry in Ukraine,” says Troels Lund Poulsen.

It is also noted that the Ukrainian “Bogdana” can fire all types of 155-mm shells and will be an important element in the development of the future Ukrainian army. The contract is worth €175 million, or €9.5 million per Bohdan.

Production line of the Bogdana air defense system

The Bohdana self-propelled artillery system is the first 155-mm wheeled artillery system in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is public knowledge that Ukraine is capable of producing 10 cars a month. During the full-scale war, the artillery unit went through several stages of modernization and now has a shell dispenser. The chassis is based on Czech Tatra Phoenix 8×8 or Tatra T815 trucks with a Puma L2 Long cab. The basic version was built on the KrAZ chassis. The base is also manufactured by Ukrainian Armor. Serial production began after February 24, 2022.
