Despite Musk’s statements about peaceful use, the Russian army is using satellite internet in war
Ukrainian soldiers and volunteers report that Russians are using the Starlink satellite Internet system in military operations against Ukraine. According to volunteer Serhiy Sternenko, this information is being confirmed, and the evidence collected will be passed on to the highest level.
The Russians probably purchased the Starlink system through the United Arab Emirates with already activated accounts and are using it in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
What is not parity now
And it’s true that we can already see their starlinks.
Honestly thought they will do it earlier https://t.co/qCRf38HVrC— Солдат удачи (@cpt_mitcheII) February 8, 2024
However, the Ukrainian military complain about the low speed of the Internet from Starlink. These problems have been observed for several months, and have become particularly serious over the past week.
It is also reported that access to Starlink has been unblocked in part of the occupied Luhansk region.
It should be noted that SpaceX founder Elon Musk emphasized that Starlink is intended for peaceful use only. According to Starlink’s coverage map, satellite Internet is not available in a number of countries, including Russia, Belarus, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Iran, Cuba, China, North Korea, and Syria.
Last year, SpaceX also restricted the Ukrainian Armed Forces from using Starlink for drones.
