Equipped with AI and 360-degree scanning helmets: Israel has developed a new generation tank Merkava Barak

Israel introduced a new generation of Merkava battle tank, called the Merkava Barak. This tank is equipped with artificial intelligence and electronically controlled weapons. It is planned to be commissioned by the end of 2023.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said that the Barak tank means “lightning” in Hebrew. The new modification, he said, demonstrates that technology can provide the army with a qualitative advantage.

The tank, also known as the Merkava Mark 5, is expected to be put into service by the end of 2023. It will gradually replace the Merkava Mark 4, which, according to the military, is the basis of the Israeli armored corps.

“The new tank is equipped with artificial intelligence systems for image processing and advanced surveillance and scanning capabilities for the crew inside. It will also have a combat helmet worn by commanders, giving them access to combat data during operations, allowing them to perform 360-degree scans of the environment outside the tank with a simple movement of the head,” the statement said.

This equipment will help to determine the location of targets in real time without putting the crew in danger. In addition, the tank is equipped with multi-touch screens and artificial intelligence sensors for quick information collection.

According to the military, the Barak tank will also be equipped with the Trophy anti-tank defense system, which will provide it with an advantage on the battlefield.

  • On July 17, it became known that the Israeli army began using artificial intelligence to select targets for air strikes and organize logistics during the war with Iran. It is noted that one of the artificial intelligence models is called Fire Factory. It uses target information to calculate ammunition loads and prioritize.
