Escalation of tensions: North Korea launches cruise missiles toward the Yellow Sea
North Korea fired several new cruise missiles toward the Yellow Sea. This is the first cruise missile launch since September 2023.
This was reported by Yonhap.
The cruise missile launch came a few days after Pyongyang said it had tested an underground nuclear strike drone.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile launch took place around 7 a.m. local time, but did not provide details.
“As we step up our monitoring and vigilance, our military is working closely with the United States to monitor additional signs of North Korean provocations,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.
It is noted that this is the DPRK’s first cruise missile launch since September 2023. Then, on September 2, North Korea launched several cruise missiles toward the Yellow Sea at about four in the morning local time.
As a reminder, the DPRK has tested a submarine nuclear weapons system, the Hyeol-5-23, in the Sea of Japan. The country’s Defense Ministry emphasized that this is a response to the joint military exercises of South Korea, the United States, and Japan that started on January 15.
