EU plans to start formal accession talks with Ukraine in late June – Politico
Politico writes about this, citing several sources.
Currently, European and Ukrainian diplomats are trying to persuade Hungary not to interfere. In particular, intensive bilateral diplomacy is underway “to solve the problems of Hungarian minorities in Ukraine”.
Kyiv believes that it has succeeded in fulfilling Hungary’s demands and is waiting for a response from Budapest.
One EU diplomat suggested that Hungary may want to stop negotiating Ukraine’s accession to the EU before it takes its turn to preside over the EU Council in July. Kyiv and its supporters in the EU are calling for an intergovernmental conference to be held before then.
“There was a feeling that this should not be done before the elections [to the European Parliament on June 9] because it could become an election issue,” the EU diplomat said.
Hungary is being persuaded not to block the start of negotiations now, and is being assured that it will have this opportunity in the future.
