The US Department of Commerce for the first time introduced sanctions against Russian airline planes that were manufactured in Europe.
The restrictions apply to 25 Airbus A320, A321, and A330 airliners from I-Fly, Nordwind, Red Wings, S7 Airlines, Ural Airlines and Yamal Airlines, according to a statement from the US Bureau of Industry and Security, which is part of the Commerce Department.
“The US and our partners have implemented broad, powerful export controls for industrial sectors, such as the aerospace industry, that Russia uses to support military aggression. The designation of 25 aircraft manufactured outside the United States will reduce the further ability of Russian airlines to fly on airliners manufactured in the United States and the European Union,” – commented the representative of the US Department of Commerce, Matthew S. Axerold, on the new restrictions.
If an organization chooses to refuel, repair or maintain aircraft on the sanctions list, it may itself face US sanctions. These may include imprisonment, fines, loss of export privileges and other restrictions.
How was the list of sanctioned aircraft formed?
The list was determined by the US Bureau of Industry and Security. Its experts, on the basis of open data, found out which foreign planes were used by Russian airlines for flights abroad without US permission.
According to the decision of the American government, from March 2, 2022, Russian air carriers must obtain permission to use aircraft for foreign flights.
These requirements apply not only to aircraft produced in the USA, but also to airliners with a share of American parts of more than 25%. Because of this, the new requirements apply to the use of European Airbus.
