Forecast: in 10 years the cost of the iPhone will rise to $6,000

Mozillion has analyzed the growth in the value of smartphones over the past decade and, based on this, made several predictions about how much higher smartphone prices will rise over the next ten years.

5-6 years ago the price tag of the flagship $1000 was something incredible, but now it is the norm. Apple’s iPhone X 2017 was the first phone to be sold at retail for $999. Despite this cost, it was very popular. Competitors, including Samsung, and even Chinese manufacturers, who were proud of low price tags, soon followed Apple’s example.

According to a Mozillion study, the cost of the flagship iPhone increased from $199 in 2012 for the iPhone 5 to $1099 for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, an increase of 452%. Surprisingly, next on the list are Motorola and Huawei. Yes, Huawei’s top devices have risen in price by 221%. The price of high-end Motorola phones rose from $299.99 in 2012 to $999.99 in 2022, making them 233% more expensive.

Samsung is in fourth place with an increase of about 184% for its best phones with the highest performance. The price of Nokia’s premium phones has risen the least in a decade – only 55%.

If this pace continues, by 2032 the flagships will cost:

  • Apple – $6069
  • Motorola – $3333
  • Huawei – $3300
  • OnePlus – $2342
  • Sony – $2358

Although the report is interesting, it should be taken as a final forecast. However, with rising prices for everything from food to fuel and the scarcity of resources that have struck the world, prices could rise significantly.
