From dawn to dusk: NASA rover shows what a day on the Red Planet looks like

At the end of 2023, NASA’s Curiosity rover captured a “time-lapse” of a Martian day for 12 hours from one position, capturing its own shadow on the landscape.

According to NASA, Curiosity was instructed to record the 12-hour sequence a few days before the start of the solar conjunction on Mars, a natural phenomenon that could interfere with the rover’s operation. It happened in mid-November. The goal was to test whether the rover could record weather events on the planet. According to NASA, the goal was not achieved.

Curiosity’s Hazcam cameras, which were recorded, are typically used to help avoid terrain that could be dangerous for the rover. Curiosity recorded video from its position at the foot of Mount Sharp on Mars from 5:30 am to 5:30 pm.
