German Defense Ministry raises alarm: Russia jams GPS in the Baltic region

The German Ministry of Defense has said that Russia is likely behind a series of GPS signal disruptions in the Baltic region,according to the German website T-online.

“The disruptions in the global navigation satellite system are most likely of Russian origin and are based on disruptions in the electromagnetic spectrum, in particular those occurring in the Kaliningrad region,” a representative of the German ministry told the media.

Russia jams GPS signal – what is known

On January 4, Marcus Johnson, a member of the Mastodon research network, reported that GPS signal failures were being recorded over several European countries. Researchers believe that the reason for this is the electronic warfare base in the Kaliningrad region of Russia.

On January 31, Estonian Army Commander-in-Chief Martin Herem said that Russia was likely behind the increase in jamming of satellite signals used by airlines, smartphones, and weapons systems in Eastern Europe.

On March 14, the media reported that Russia may have jammed the satellite signal on the plane of British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps as it flew near the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
