Germany confirms it will supply Ukraine with an additional batch of Leopard 1 tanks
The other day we wrote that an unknown country had purchased an additional batch of Leopard 1 tanks for Ukraine. As it turned out, that country was Germany.
The information was shared by the German publication Deutsche Welle, citing a representative of the country’s Ministry of Defense. This includes 25 Leopard 1A5 tanks, five armored recovery vehicles and two training tanks. The German government signed a contract with Rheinmetall to supply and repair the equipment. By the way, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are to receive about 200 Leopard 1 tanks in total. Perhaps some of them are already in Ukraine.
The Leopard 1 is Germany’s main battle tank. They began developing it after World War II in cooperation with France, but then the cooperation was terminated. Leopard 1 is in service with 12 countries. Thanks to a modernization program, it is still in use today. By the way, by 1984, about 4744 Leopard 1 units were produced. The tank participated in the Bosnian War and the War in Afghanistan.
