GM Cruise recalls 950 self-driving cars from US roads due to tragic accident
General Motors Cruise recalls 950 self-driving cars from roads across the United States due to an accident involving one of its robotaxis.
Earlier, on October 4, a Cruise unmanned taxi hit a woman crossing the road in San Francisco. The woman was first hit by another car that ran a red light. When the Cruise taxi tried to resume driving, it did not notice the woman and dragged her along.
According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the collision detection system of the Cruise automated driving system (ADS) software may not respond properly after an accident.
The recall is the latest setback for GM’s Cruise division, which is facing questions about its technology, which GM says is key to its growth plans.
In June, GM CEO Mary Barra confirmed the forecast that Cruise could generate $50 billion in revenue by 2030. In the third quarter of this year, Cruise lost more than $700 million.
