Google comment
The company gave some explanations on the competition page. In particular, the question “Are participants from Ukraine, Russia, or Belarus allowed to participate in GSoC 2022?” the following is indicated:
Due to the current circumstances, GSoC 2022 does not accept participants (sponsors, mentors or administrators of organizations) from Russia, Belarus or the so-called Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People's Republic (LPR). There are no restrictions for participants who are on the territory of Ukraine, but outside the DPR and LPR
Thus, anyone from Ukraine who lives in the controlled area can join the competition.
Google Summer of Code: what it is
- At GSoC, Google has been selecting open-source projects since 2005.
- Only students can participate.
- The competition itself lasts from February (when participants start submitting applications) to the end of November (when participants can submit the final working product). However, the code is written directly only in the summer – hence the name. All other time is devoted to the preparation and verification of results.
- Winners receive cash grants.
- During the competition, it attracted more than 18,000 participants from 746 organizations.
