Greece invests 27 billion euros in the army of the future with Achilles Shield system

In response to growing geopolitical challenges, Greece has announced a revolutionary 27 billion euro armed forces modernization plan. The program includes the implementation of the advanced ‘Achilles Shield’ air defense system and transition to a network-centric defense strategy using artificial intelligence and unmanned technologies.

Technological transformation of the Greek army

Greece has announced an unprecedented 27 billion euro armed forces modernization program that will transform the country into one of the most technologically advanced armies in the region. The central element of the upgrade will be the development and implementation of the ‘Achilles Shield’ air defense system, which will significantly enhance the country’s airspace protection.

According to Defense News, the modernization program envisions a radical change in defense doctrine. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias emphasized that the country is moving away from traditional military strategies in favor of advanced technologies, including mobile missile systems, unmanned technologies, and artificial intelligence systems.

Key modernization directions include:

  • Development of new satellite surveillance systems
  • Equipping the military with innovative communication tools and sensors
  • Comprehensive reorganization of the command structure
  • Modernization of military bases according to new technological requirements

As part of the program, Greece is also deepening military cooperation with key partners. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held talks with Israeli leadership and confirmed plans to purchase American F-35 fighters, despite opposition calls to favor European alternatives.

The large-scale modernization of the Greek army is a response to increasing military spending in Europe, driven by the war in Ukraine and potential reduction in US defense commitments in the region. This is the largest military reform since the period of defense budget cuts in 2010-2018 when the country was experiencing a financial crisis.

The large-scale modernization of the Greek army demonstrates the country’s serious intentions to strengthen its defense capabilities amid growing regional tensions. Investments in advanced technologies and international cooperation will allow Greece to create one of the most modern armed forces in the region.
