Greece to stop servicing Russian air defense systems and hand them over to Ukraine – media

Greece has decided to cancel the contract with Russia for the maintenance of Tor-M1 and Osa-AKM air defense missile systems, which are in service with the country’s army.

This was reported by Pronews.gr, citing a “top secret document” that leaked through parliament.

According to the publication, it says that Athens will no longer purchase spare parts and components for the Tor-M1 and Osa-AKM SAMs.

Because of this, these systems may soon be decommissioned. The available spare parts will only last for a few months due to their small quantity and the government’s refusal to fulfill the existing contract.

In total, the Greek army and air force are armed with 21 Tor-M1 self-propelled air defense systems and 38 Osa-AKM self-propelled systems with a maximum range of 10-12 km.

The contract for further support of the systems in the coming years is worth more than EUR 102 million. The article claims that “most likely” these SAMs will be transferred to Ukraine through third countries, and that the decision is “purely political.”
