Hungary is changing its vector: sharply reducing energy dependence on Russia

In the future, the Hungarian government is going to switch the operation of the Paks nuclear power plant from Russian nuclear fuel to French. Thus, Budapest plans to reduce the country’s energy dependence on Russia.

As Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said at a meeting with participants of the Hungarian Civic Forum, Budapest has set the government’s goals for the years ahead, Telex reports.

Orban said that among other things, they include achieving “energy self-sufficiency, which will include the operation of the Paks NPP using French fuel instead of Russian fuel.”

The station in Paksha was built in the 1980s. It runs on Russian nuclear fuel. Previously, it was delivered to Hungary by rail through Ukraine, but after the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia began to arrive in a different way.

At the same time, France has the largest number of nuclear reactors in Europe. At the same time, Paris produces fuel for them on its own, importing uranium from Australia, Niger, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
