In eastern Congo, militants fire on a UN mission helicopter with peacekeepers
On Friday, February 2, rebels in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) attacked a UN mission helicopter. Two peacekeepers were wounded in the attack
This was reported by the UN press service.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a briefing that the UN peacekeeping department believes the attack was carried out by members of the M23 rebel group (the March 23 Movement).
According to him, it happened in the Karuba region of North Kivu province, in the city of Masisi.
As a result of the incident, two South African peacekeepers were injured, including one who was seriously wounded.
“The helicopter was able to land safely in Goma, and the peacekeepers are currently receiving medical care,” the statement said.
It is also noted that the head of the UN peacekeeping mission in the DR Congo, Bintu Keita, condemned the attack on the helicopter. She stated that the mission would make every effort to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Last year, in February, unidentified persons also fired on a UN peacekeeping mission helicopter in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Then one peacekeeper was killed.
